The other day while Dolores,Cathy and I sat around talking, Cathy reminisced about her now dearly departed dog, C C. She held C C’s collar to show Dolores while Gabrielle sat in Dolores’s lap.

Gabrielle became enamored with the collar requesting that Cathy allow her to smell and actually lick it, which she did fervently. She also smelled C C’s urn which held the ashes that once was a bounding, happy, healthy little run-away of a dog. When Cathy went to put everything up, Gabrielle became very animated on Dolores’s lap.

I knew it was because she was watching C C’s ghost since I saw her as well. Gabrielle started whining while looking down at C’s spirit. So I asked if she’d like to get down to play with the ghost dog to which she answered yes in her own doggy manner.

Dolores helped her down and Gabrielle immediately held her bottom in the air while putting her head down on her front paws and jumping at the spirit of our Cease. You could see the two of them playing until C C decided to stop and follow her mother down the hall where she had gone minutes before only for a moment of solitude and remembrance.

Gabrielle looked at me as if to say, she won’t play anymore to which I told her to go an ask her to play still. What you don’t know is Gabrielle won’t go past my bedroom door in this particular hall because of ghosts she’s seen but this time she followed C C down to where the hall turns to my utility room, whining and begging the re-birthed dog to please come on and play.

Though she’d have liked following her into the utility room, there’s two reasons she wouldn’t one being ghostly, the other being bath-ly. Then Gabrielle came running back to tell me where C C had gone. Of course I did my best as a mother and told her it was okay, that C C wanted to make sure to comfort her mother before she left. Gabrielle kept looking down the hall expecting the dog to return and play but C C didn’t.

This is only one example of animals seeing ghosts but unlike others who may be frightened of ghostly visits this mother lets my little girl know that playing with her ghostly friend is okay.
